What is the GRACE Art program?img_7792

Since 1976 the Greater Reston Art Center (GRACE) has organized and administered this art enrichment program to provide supplemental art lessons in elementary schools throughout the region. Parent coordinators and volunteers present artists and related projects in each classroom on a monthly basis.

Who pays for GRACE Art at Sunrise Valley?

GRACE Art is funded entirely by the SVES PTA. In addition to the charge for the e-portfolios, the PTA purchases the art supplies necessary to complete the art projects. Each month (our school participates in 5 months of GRACE Art), we need enough materials for at least 585 students. Your PTA membership dollars are an essential support for the GRACE Art program.

How does it work?

GRACE provides e-portfolios with PowerPoint presentations, background materials and suggested art projects. The school coordinators refine and distribute this information to volunteers to make the program as user-friendly as possible.

Is it a big time commitment?

Not at all! You can do all five sessions or just one depending on your schedule. The session begins with a 10-15 minute discussion guided by a PowerPoint followed by an art project. With set-up and clean up, the time commitment is about 90 minutes.

Do I have to be an art expert to volunteer?

Absolutely not! You will receive an annotated PowerPoint presentation with images to lead the discussion. The kids enjoy participating so your role is to keep the conversation lively and focused.
